XL-7 vs Boss DR202 and SP303

2003-12-30 by Honest Steve

A friend of mine is wanting to get into making electronic music again, right
now he is most interested in jungle. I am pushing for him to get a XL-7
like mine since it has a true high power synth engine that is expandable (I
just got the World Exp ROM and it is great) and a great sequencer that he
can use to drive future synths/samplers. He wants to get a Boss DR202 and a
Boss SP303 since he has had a DR202 before and feels a comfort zone with it.
I think either one will come out to about $500 so price isn't really an
issue. I told him that for a sampler he is better off saving up to get
something more powerful (like an EMU refurb unit) and then use the XL-7 to
drive it. I may be being pigheaded about it, but does anyone have any
opinions on the "XL-7 vs Boss DR202 and SP303" debate.

Thanks for any input
Steve

Hi,
Yep - its gotta be an xx7 - mos def!!!!!!
theres really no compitetion here. I mean depending on your friends
budget or how cheap he/she can get the hardware the xx7 wins hands
down.
I looked into the dr202 but waited till I got the extra $$s for an
xx7.I use it with an sp303. A v.good hands-on combination (IMO).

As for choice of rom - Thats down to personal taste - but even there,
the rom sounds are so maliable once in the xx7 that its almost
irrelivant -( IMO).

Again - go for an xx7 and dont look back

Not pigheaded, I think your right on the money! :)

I also have an XL-7 and the SP-303. It's a great inexpensive
combination. Before I got my XL-7, I looked at some of the Boss
rythym units. The reason I went with the EMU was expandablitity (the
Boss's had none), nice pads (to play on), great sequencer, need I go
on? :)
The SP-303 I had before my XL-7. The SP-303 is a nice basic sampler.
It's good for triggering on-shot samples, like a vocal phrase, drum
sounds, or sound fx's. That's what I use it for. It can NOT pitch a
sample across the pads or keyboard range (like a Yamaha SU200 or an
EMU sampler, for example). If he wants to sample or create
synth/keyboard sounds, go for the EMU sampler.

But an XL-7 or MP-7 (maybe the MP because he wants to do Jungle) and
an SP-303 would be a good start, IMO.

but i mainly use it as a toy to use with my turntables..

as a sampler its kinda in the same league as the casio sk-1
cool but limited..

if you're going to buy a sampler for production i personally
wouldn't go for the sp-303 but rather something a little more
powerful.. the 303's great in how easy and simple it is for live
sampling and such but for other things its way limited

happy new year
