Live sets?

Live sets?

2003-12-19 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

Anyone else on here using the XX-7 as their main sequencer in a live set?
Just curious how others are using their XX-7's live, how you transition
between songs, deal with external gear PC's, etc.

I djed for a while this summer at a place called AVA in nyc (very nice penthouse/rooftop lounge) and incorporated the XL7 with the dj mixer and added a guitarist every once in a while. Using xmix and tap tempo it was easy and great. I would overlay beat to to a playing cd, or play the pads along with one, then fade out to solo XL7 for as long as I felt it, used xmix and played parts on the pads. I had a submixer and a compressor and bbe and ran the XL7 and any guest instrumentalist through that and then the whole submix into the dj mixer.

RE: [xl7] Live sets?

I use the MP-7 to give my band that extra Hip-Hop flavor or to do percussion
loops. The only drag is no click out for the drummer. So, I link it with
my Roland XP sequencer which has a dedicated click out for drummers. After
syncing the 2 machines, it's cake - not too mention a fat loop for the
drummer to lock to with at least 16-20 tracks of beats, horns, and strings;
the rest is played live. I also have used my MP with just me on keys/Synth
bass and acoustic guitar. Sweet trio!

Couldn't you set this up using the Sub Outs?

I do. Transitioning between songs is a bit tricky, as
if I kill my sequence, I also stop my Electrix
Repeater which I use to record live loops. I
purchased a Numark Axis 9 CD player which I mainly use
for short samples (for the "scratching" of them) but I
also keep some longer tracks that I use for
transitions. Sometimes I'll find humorous spoken word
stuff. (language tapes rule!) or other bits of flotsam
and jetsam as culk between pieces.
