eliminate spam -- make membership "approve only"

eliminate spam -- make membership "approve only"

2003-12-01 by just john

When I complained about group spam a couple weeks ago, I got this
from the group owner.

>>John,
>>
>>I get these already, as part of the group. Unfortunately, there's
>>little I can do to prevent them - I could go to a 'approve only'
>>membership, but yahoo's implementation of this can be problematic -
>>I've got another group where people were waiting for weeks to get
>>added.
>>
>>I'm not sure what we can do about this - banning spoofed accounts
>>doesn't do much. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

In other yahoogroups I'm in that DO have the "approve only" option
set to on, I have seen NO problems.

So I wonder what the other group members think about this. I vote
for going "approve only." Anybody else?

(And have you noticed how EVERY SINGLE GROUP SPAM is for websites
based on MCI?)

"approve only" is the way to go. (the first post is moderated)
The list owner can appoint other moderators to help in keeping approvals
timely.

Approve only is a real pain, leads to more hassles than it's worth from my
past Yahoogroups experiences. We only get a couple of spams a week if
that, that's not too bad now is it?

Also, whoever keeps passing on the spam to moderators attention, it's
really not neccesary. I appreciate it, but there's nothing I can do
except remove the addy from our list, and I do that anyway when I see
these types of emails. As most of these are group mailings that hit
multiple lists at once, it's out of our hands to control.

The xl7-owner@yahoogroups.com address is set up by yahoo specifically
for reporting xl7 group abuse of this sort (abuse@yahoogroups.com is
a general address.) If you're tired of getting abuse reports,
eliminate the abuse.

You can set it so that only new members are moderated.
Once their first post has been approved, they are no longer moderated.
That eliminates 99% of the spam, even though they keep changing their
originating address.

Re: [xl7] eliminate spam -- make membership "approve only"

2003-12-01 by Ravi Ivan Sharma

Only the first one. You set "new members moderated" Then only new members messages need to be approved. But all you do is approve and change that member to not moderated. Then you simply ban all new members who are spamming and disapprove their messages. It takes me 1 to 2 minutes every two days to manage many lists this way. It all depends on how much the moderators care about thier lists or not.
