Knackered XL-7

Knackered XL-7

2003-11-07 by dmfg316

My XL-7 has given up the ghost, nothing happening, changed leads,
plugs, still zilch. Emu have suggested to put back in for service,
fair enough.
Thing is it's been bugged since I got it. Initially it would only
stay alive for 20 mins then 'freeze' requiring to be turned off for
30 mins before trying again. Sent to get fixed, some problem
with 'starter chip' - away 8 weeks ,had only had bloody thing 4 weeks.
Has presented with ongoing difficulties ever since, control dial,
recording in song mode etc etc could go on.
Reason I'm raising this is, has anyone else had so many difficulties
or do you think my XL-7 is kaput,as I have from the start.
Any other suggestions would be grateful. XL-7 now 17 months old, shop
didnt have any others at initial time of problems.
Cheers Dom

Anybody ever attempt to sync the XL-7 with the Pioneer CDJ-1000 so that the
tempos are locked? I don't see a Midi I/O on the CDJ-1000. It only has
stereo I/O is there a way to sync with these jacks?

Thanks,

Sorry you can't actually do that... There is no midi signal on the CDJ, and the
digital out doesn't carry any timing info except to lock to a digital source for
playback without snaps and pops.

I have found it to be pretty efficient ... No real problems ... a little flaky sometimes but always comes around....I hope I don't jinx myself because it's a full moon tonight and I plan on jammin'...

Sorry to hear about that ...I had the misfortune to discover that
those units are not reliable at all (at least mine and some other
ones i know too !)...Feels like it was built to crash just after
warranty time has expired, so you had luck in some kind of way... Now
the worst thing is : Even though i can repair it myself, E-mu will
never give me any schematic to do so, instead they want me to send it
far away and be charged the maximum....So my question is : HEY E-mu!!
are you selling top-secret military weapons ? or do you just want to
steal more money from me ? Anyway, now i know one thing for sure : I
will NEVER EVER buy a f*cking piece of gear with the name E-mu on
it !

I truly believe that you may have rec'd a rare unit in which something
is seriously wrong at the core level- deeper than the surface problems
that you have dealt with might indicate. I happens with occassionally
all gear. I have had an XL7 for about 18 months - use it constantly -
haul it out to gigs etc - never a single problem and the thing is
built like a tank. It is seriously (I think) a crowning achievement
evolved fromthe Emu module family. I would appeal to the higher ups at
Emu to look carefully at your purchase/registration and repair history
- perhaps that will acheive a positive resolve - but obviously this is
just a suggestion from a civilian - I am not an Emu employee and I
have no inlfuence with Emu.

Good luck!

and best regards

Ed

Nope, you'd need to do it manually the old fashioned DJ way. One of
reasons I wish the XX-7's had finer tempo resolution actually. Oh well,
get it as close as you can, then adjust the tempo on the CDJ until it's
locked.
