Can you make an XL7 into an MP7?

Can you make an XL7 into an MP7?

2003-10-18 by K2500X

Hi all,

I was just wondering. With the cost of the XL7 so low right now.
Would it be possible for me to just buy an XL7 and replace the XL7
rom with a pure phatt rom and have the equivlant of an MP7? Will I
have access to all of the MP7 patches (i.e. atleast be able to load
them in the user banks)? What about the MP7 sequence patterns?

Basically, will I be missing anything if I don't just flat out buy an
MP7?

Thanks... Ken

howdy Ken.

actually, the MP7 ROM is slightly different than the Pure Phatt ROM, and the
patterns for the MP7 do not work with the Pure Phatt. this could be
considered by many to be a bona-fide bummer.

on a ROM related note - i just bought the Protozoa and the Ensoniq Project
ROMs (only $79 apiece!) from E-mu. i've head the old Proteus modules and
i've also heard that the Protozoa reproduces those same exact sounds with
little if any change in tone. but i'm buying the Ensoniq Project ROM on
faith, hoping that it might approximate the Ensoniq Real World and Urban
Dance Project ROMs for the MR series of keys/modules. a friend had an MR
Rack (still worth getting for it's always-on multi mode - real easy) with
these ROMs and they sounded swell. i seem to recall that each of those ROMs
was 24mb or so of samples apiece. so, given the cut down from 48mb of
samples to 32mb, what was sacrificed? does anyone know?

also, does anyone have this ROM? does it sound any good? why doesn't E-mu
have MP3 demos of the expansion ROMs that aren't used in separate modules?

I ordered the Ensoniq Project ROM on blind faith after havign owned
the MR Rack with the world ROM some years ago. I never thought about
the fact that each of the Ensoniq ROM's had 24 Meg while the Emu ROM
only has 32 available for the both of them. I also gave up on trying
to get the MP-7 version of the Mo Phatt ROM and ordered the Pure
Phatt. After a week they have not shipped and the Pure Phatt is now
out of stock. I am considering canceling the Pure Phat and getting
the Protozoa and Definitive B3 ROM's instead.

"After a week they have not shipped and the Pure Phatt is now is out
of stock."

>>> You need to call them up. I ordered a Friday, then when I called
Tuesday the order was still pending due to some adress validation
crap.... It seems that Emu is very anal about credit card orders and
it also seems that the website's info about the orders is not always
accurate. They told me they'd emailed me but I never got no email.
That day I was supposed to get another email if there was still any
problems with the order, which never made to my box either. By the
third day I talked to this nice woman called Maureen? who sorted
things out and made sure that the order was shipped that same day.
So, your order could be already on its way or waiting for you to call
to give the necessary information for them to go ahead with the
order... I'm glad I finally recieved my roms but am rather annoyed
that I had to pay for several rather lengthy calls to Cal 'cause I
couldn't get the 888 number to go through. They called me back in
several occations, though. I think they ought to find a faster way of
processing credit cards/orders and give the low level phone
attendants atleast some minimal info of what is that they are
selling. Specially since the website doesn't have in many cases
enough informaition to begin with....

Good luck with that...

BTW, I'll be posting a partial review as soon as I have some more
time to sit down and get a feel of them.

Yeah that is a bummer and a shame. So what do you mean my 'slightly'
different? A buddy of mine has an MP7 and was able to load all the
MoPhatt patches on there. That would make me think the ROMs were
exactly the same. I guess we're talking about 3 'phatt' ROMs now.
Pure Phatt, MoPhatt, and MP7. Can anyone confirm that these are
actually all different? Are the preset patterns in the command
stations stored in ROM or in the sequencer's flash memory?

Thanks,
Ken

Now that you mention it... When I opened my XL-7 to install the new
roms I notice that the XL-7 rom said 32mb and 2mb flash... Maybe the
Command Station's memory is on the roms?

There's just 2. The Pure Phatt ROM is exactly the same as the ROM
that's in the Mo' Phatt. The MROM (from the MP) uses the same
samples(instruments)but has some different presets. ROM ID and it
supports patterns because all of the BEATs listed in the
Mo'Phatt/Pure Phatt manuals are now kits on the MP. Just open the
appendix of the Mo'Phatt module and the MP-7 and check the bank
listing for the comparison.

For what it's worth, I was able to download the MP-7 patterns and get
them to work in an XL-7 with a PurePhatt ROM. It was by no means
easy. I had to get a binary editor out and edit the bank-select byte
in each of the patterns. I don't know if it would be legal to post
the edited patterns up here on the site. Any thoughts?

It would be wonderful if you can post them. UPS just dropped off my
PurePhatt and Ensoniq Project ROM's, even though the Emu web site
states that my order is still pending.

Clint I just wanted to THANK YOU sooo much for uploading those MP-7
patterns.... I have been looking for this since I brought my mo
phatt and instaled in my xl-7. This is great I just finished
uploading them.

Thanks !!!

Re: Can you make an XL7 into an MP7?

This is great news clint. Thanks so much for ULing the patterns. Now
to get back to my original question. Do these patterns effectively
turn an XL-7 into an MP-7? They sound exactly the same on the pure
phatt ROM as they do on the MP-7 itself?
Would there be any other drawbacks to not buying the MP-7 itself?
Less ram by loading the MP-7 patterns? Are the patches from MP-7 and
Pure Phatt actually different?

Thanks again,
Ken

What if you don't have the PurePhatt ROM? I'm full up
with ROMs, but I *hate* the XL-7 patterns. Not my cup
of tea. I'd like to try out some more hip-hop/r&b
patches that might be on the MP-7, but I wonder what
would happen if I tried it. Could I just manually go
in and reset instruments for tracks as I like? I'd
also like to sell my XL-7 ROM and replace it with a
Protean Drum ROM, but I'm wondering what havoc would
that cause.
