What kind of sampler are you looking for & what use do you plan give it? I'm just curious... since I borrowed some ideas from you current setup. :)

Right now I'm looking at two pieces that aren't even out yet (Akai MPC1000, Korg SX-1), so none of this is final. Why am I getting rid of the sp808 that I use now? Well, it does work fine for what I need to do with it 90% of the time. I only really have two issues with it, it's a bit larger than I would ideally like (space is limited in DJ booths and clubs), and the audio cuts out when you enter menus sometimes, or change effects (even if they're not on). It really is more of studio sampler than a live one IMO, the audio occasionally cutting out when you enter a menu is an example. The Korg SX-1 is appealing to me because I liek the small footprint it has, and I think the Electribe series is really one of those things that just perfect. All of the boxes are dead easy to use an sound great, very cheap too. The downside is typically slightly limited functionality in some areas (effects in the past). The new effects in this one look nice though, and the slice part means my breaks loops won't be confined to only one tempo anymore too, another plus. Smartmedia back up is nice too. The Akai on the other hand is I'm sure a much more robust sampler. My first sampler was an Akai S3000XL, and it was a beast. Never crashed, and always got the job done. The MPC1000 also has three seperate effects (which are arguably better than the Korg's), plus a global compression too. The compression would definitely come in handy live, as would the EQ capabilities of the Akai. So right now, I'm really undecided. My needs for a sampler are really basic, typically I only need to play back a few samples on one channel, and I would like to tweak effects on them live too. Both of these units will do that, it's just a question of do I want a basic, but really fun to use sampler with some neat features (the SX-1 with motion sequencing), or do I want a more utilitarian sampler that with slightly more professional sound and features (the Akai). I'm still waiting on the price of the MPC1000 to be announced, that could be a big factor in helping me decide too. rEalm What kind of sampler are you looking for & what use do you plan give it? Not to sound too unpro, but what about the Boss SP-303? I've been using it for a while, and it works pretty good, IMO. Sure, it's not velocity sensative, but it's got some ok effects. I use it mostly for sampling one-liners out of movies and TV, to trigger during songs. For that, it's great. Cheap, small footprint, and expandable using SmartMedia (up to 64MB). Can even use it as an effects proccessor using Line In or Mic. Has a MIDI In, so the XL-7 could even trigger it. Might even be able to control velocity that way (will have to check). --- In xl7@yahoogroups.com, erik_magrini@B... wrote: > Right now I'm looking at two pieces that aren't even out yet (Akai > MPC1000, Korg SX-1), so none of this is final. > > rEalm > > > > > What kind of sampler are you looking for & what use do you plan give > it? Th Sp303 is definitely a nice robust portable sampler, but I'm hoping to cover my bases for any future direction I decide to take, one reason the MPC1000 is slightly in the lead. ,<< Sure, it's not velocity sensative, but it's got some ok effects. Hey Realm, I've been considering the MPC1000 too... One thing to concider with them, though, is the countinous problems people have reported about akai products and their first OS. I'm planning to wait 'til they iron out the OS before jumping in. MPC4000 users are still waiting for the implementation of some features that were listed in the spcecs and haven't made it yet to the machine... Also there were plenty of bug reports with their last to S series samplers and even more about the Z series... I'm saving $20 a month, figuring that by the time the MPC1000 is all good I'll have about half the money to get it.... HEHE.. Also, Realm, are you planning on dropping the XL-7 too? What concerns me a bit about getting the MPC1000 is paying for a sequencer I might not use.... I'm to busy right now with work (and in debt 'til february, hehe...) an all to really push the limits of my studio (other than the piano/string thing) I'm hopin that by the time the MPC drops I'd figure out if I'd be better of running a laptop with a midi tweak box, a Z4, or just buying two processors for my Emu ESi. maybe a Kaoss and a Line6 Echo unit... About the Boss SP's, I have the Sp-505 is really fun to use and an excellent tool... Still is rather limiting with its only 4 stereo voices. I guess it be the same thing with the Sp-303. The good thing about them, is that you can find them really cheap second hand... If I find a 303 or 505 or even a 202 really cheap I'm getting another. Especially concidering what realm pointed out about the space in clubs... A XL-7 + two Sp-505 is a nice combo if you work mainly by triggering loops... --- In xl7@yahoogroups.com, erik_magrini@B... wrote: > Not to sound too unpro, but what about the Boss SP-303? > > >>>I did actually seriously consider that one as well, though if I do get > rid of the Sp808, I'd prefer to gain features or at least make the move > lateral. Hey Realm, I've been considering the MPC1000 too... One thing to concider with them, though, is the countinous problems people have reported about akai products and their first OS. >>>Definitely well aware of Akai's history in this regards. Typically it comes about whent hey promise new features though, so I'm hoping a cut down feature set like the MPC1000's isn't as bad. Still, it's only on my radar at the moment, nothing's been decided for sure yet. ,<< Also, Realm, are you planning on dropping the XL-7 too? What concerns me a bit about getting the MPC1000 is paying for a sequencer I might not use.... >>>Nah, I'm definitely keeping the XL-7, if I have another sequencer in the 1000 and it doesn't get used, so be it. <<< rEalm [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
