Favorite Computer Sequencer

Favorite Computer Sequencer

2003-09-11 by buggoutbill

Howdy,

Been messing with my XL-7 for about three weeks now, and I love it.
It's the boom. :)
Anyway, I was wondering what sequencer / audio software you guys like
using? It's time for me to upgrade, and I'm looking for some input.
I've been a Cubase man for some time, but it seems like SONAR is
preferred here. I was also looking into the new FruitLoops Studio
(can't beat the price), if anyone uses that.
Primary use would be sequencing the XL-7, and recording audio in from
a sampler and CDs.
Oh, and I'm PC / WinXP based.

Thanks,
Bill

SX 1.06 here, along with Wavelab 4, and Reason 2.5.

Re: Favorite Computer Sequencer

I thought the XL7 had a nice sequencer?

I guess if you have learned Cubase, you may as well stick with it. I
used FL3 a while back once and I was surprised at how easy it was to
knock out good sounding patterns very quickly. It was neat to use.
Sonar and Cubase seems to be for the pros, which I am not :-)

No reason you can't use both, I use different sequencers depending on the
need.

I agree with rEalm on this one .
That said you can be "pro" and not use hardware sequencers also U
know.
I use an ER-1 ,Mp-7 ,RS7000 ,MaM step sequencer (almost analog
stylee),MS2000 step modulator also,though I'd kill for a Latronic
NOTRON :P .....
Cut my teeth on a Qy300 then 700 but like the knob interface of the
RS and it's close enough to the Qy700 feature wise to keep me happy.
More than enough grunt between the 4 and all have their strengths and
weeknesses.
Emu has better swing shuffle feel (way better actually) and does down
tempo stuff way better , RS has more fluid step sequncer / XOX on
both is sort of on par (I like both). RS can handle different
meter/time sig and length per track with perfect synchro looping.
Emu has better ARPS in a huge way ,triggers ,better synth engine by a
long shot and a less hard quantised sequncer feel which I love.
The MaM has some damn nifty tricks up it's sleeve to and is great for
straight analog style (on a 70's tip) step sequencer programming.
ER-1 pure XoX fun get great expressionwith velocity over midi RS
handles NRPRN's very well with it.
Korg step seq/modulator is used as a paremeter sequncer only whilst
playing ;ead libes etc etc..
Great combination IMHO.
Can get some great polyrythmic stuff goin on with this lot.

I love my Notron, but I am looking forward to how this pans out:

looks like the best of Quasimidi in a groovebox with some real
analog thrown in.

My words exactly, but these are silly Windows users ;)

Seriously though, a dual processor Mac + Logic has been amazing for me. Throw in Reason 2.5, emagic's incredible "softsynths" (ES1, ES2, EXS24, etc) and it's been unbeatable.

The pros they all use : a mac + Logic in conjunction with Pro Tools
hooked to an ultra-xpensive analog recorder(minimum configuration)...
and the others (us), we stay on PC crap with cubase (and it's timing
problems and poor audio engine), or even worse, with Sonar... (just
joking!)

I can name quite a few 'pros' who use Cubase SX. Radiohead and Hans Zimmer, come to mind. I can name a great deal more pros who can't stand protools.

As far as logic and mastering to 2 track tape, I can't think of anyone who can disparage them.

(If you've only ever seen Cubast VST, then you need to look again. VST was the biggest pile of crap. I left Logic for Cubase, just about the time that Logic got bought out - they just stopped developing the midi side of Logic around 3.5)

Re: Favorite Computer Sequencer

I think its a fallacy that you need a MAC to run logic. (well logic 6
yeah)

Ive been running logic for 3 years on a Windows 2000... machine i
frequently have 8 EXS24 2 or 3 ES2 EVP88 Reason rewired and all my
sequences running with 5ms latency and solid results. The only time i
have crashed it is also when I try to open Sonar at the same time.
The NT kernel is rick solid.

My favorite midi sequencer on the computer is c-lab notator (later named logic) on atari. As far as audio goes its cool edit.

Whao ! Glad to see a single joke has awaken long-time sleeping
members of this group !! Now that i know this, I'll do it
again .....Who could seriously think it's an absolute rule with no
exceptions and not simply a joke ? anyone but you (no there's Nick
too!).... Btw I also can name pros that work on an old atari ST or
with no computer at all , others that record in one pass with their
band on a multitrack recorder to keep a live feeling(Frank Black)
some with obsolete Mac or PC, some with brand new bi-processor rack-
mounted machines and on and on ... on the other hand you could find
(rich)amatuers with a NEVE console in their (huge)bedroom because
this world is diversity and I was just joking...Get it ?

I know about the 'Pro tools shit' phenomenom, nothing new here....

VST was the biggest pile of crap.

Seriously I'm ignoring Cubase SX because it can't (and won't ever)
record automation of my old but beloved DSP Factory system so I stay
with VST where it's perfectly integrated, so yes I had VST in mind...

Beauty, well said! Shuffle on the XX-7's is definitely one of the
best I've heard.

Thanks for all the replies! And glad this didn't turn into a 'my
sequencer vs. your sequencer' flamewar. :)

Don't get me wrong, I like the sequencer on the XL-7, it's sweet. I
find it easier to 'tweak' a song on the computer, that's all.

I've been trying to get the drummap file (to use in Cubase) off of
EMU's website, but the link doesn't work. Figures, it's the only
link that's broken, and it's the one file I need.

Thanks again,
Bill

Sonar II here. Soon to be Sonar 3. I have FruityLoops but hardly use
it. I don't like the MIDI implimentation. With FL and Reason you
have to jump through hoops if you want to move a project to a larger
sequencer or DAW.
