MIDI keyboard controllers with the XL-7? and Hello!

MIDI keyboard controllers with the XL-7? and Hello!

2003-09-05 by Mike

Hi,

Just picked up a new XL-7, I'm looking at the Korg MicroKontrol, with
its drum pads and 8 knobs and 8 sliders. If I connect this keyboard
to the XL-7 will I be able to patch its knobs/sliders to the XL-7's
parameters such as the modulation matrix (patchcords), effects
settings, LFOs, EG's, etc? I'm sure I will but will it be an
intuitive and streamlined process?

Also, I'm looking for a studio sampler like the E-mu Ultra series or
the A3000, A4000, or A5000 from Yamaha. I like the fact Yamahas are
filled with many effects, and from what I've read, are easier to
use. I don't need to burn ROMS, since this setup will be used at
home. I want a sampler that works like Recycle, and allows twisted
sound manipulation and synth capabilites for abstract and IDM music.
Money is an issue, so used is the word here. I guess reliablity too.

What I'm looking for is a powerful system consisting of 3 pieces, the
XL-7 for its sequencer and ROM sounds, a MIDI keyboard with knobs
(for more control), and a studio sampler with effects. Maybe an FX
box if the sampler doesn't have many. I looked at the RS7000 for a
while but it looks limiting, and I've told I can get more power out
of seperate components. My concern is weither using all 3 devices
together will be smooth and relatively easy.

Thanks in advance for any advice,
Mike

I can't understand why you're looking at getting a fader box to control the
XL-7 which lists amongst its many advantages the ability to be used as a
fader box for other equipment. I don't know much about the korg
microcontrol, but if money is an issue like you say, why waste it on a
controller keyboard? If you really need a keyboard and can't make do with
the XL7 pads, then get a cheap secondhand evolution thing for now and think
about upgrading when money isn't as tight... The XL-7 has got the drum pads
and knobs/faders covered.

As regards a sampler, I would say get a secondhand Emu Ultra with RFX if
possible. It's not gonna be the cheapest option, but it's the most powerful
and you'll have problems creating *really* twisted sounds. It works great
with Recycle too... I've seen several E5000s going on ebay for peanuts
recently. ESi2000/4000s are also great pieces of kit that you can pick up
for next to nothing these days.

I don't know much about Yamaha samplers, but from what I've heard they do
have some issues (especially concerning SCSI drives and connections), so
I've always avoided them. A dedicated FX box and a seperate sampler is a
better option in my opinion (unless you go for an Emu Ultra with RFX...).

Stu

A few obvious reasons: (i) a dedicated fader box doesn't interfere
with operation of the XL-7; (ii) most fader boxes are of
higher-quality than the XL-7's bank of knobs; (iii) many fader boxes
give better feedback of the fader values.

You missed out the word 'expensive'. I don't think the Korg microkontrol is
in quite the same league as the JL Copper Motormix that you favour. And if
the intended use is solely studio-based, and money is an issue, then the
XL-7 should be more than adequate...

> You missed out the word 'expensive'.

True. The XL-7 is easily as good as an entry-level fader box, and
fader boxes can cost anything from $100 (which I think is what I paid
for each of my FaderBabies) up into four figures. (The Motor-Mix is
around $1000.)

The Motor-Mix is from CM Labs (Carl Malone's company), not JLC.

True. The Motor-Mix is somewhat overkill for studio work, but
indispensable for live performance.

I don't like the layout of the Korg and would not consider it an
enhancement to the XL-7. If you can swing it, some sites have the
Novation KS4 at closeout pricing. It has lots of controls to use for
programing and gives you a VA to match up with the ROMpler sounds of
the XL-7. The KS4 would be handy for patch programming. I use the KS
Rack and like it a lot. Also note, you can get a simple MIDI
keyboard and run it through the XL-7. The commandstation will merge
the signals, allowing you to use the keyboard of the controller and
the knobs of the XL-7 at the same time. This is handy when editing
soft synths.

For a sampler, I was lucky enough to pick up a new Yamaha A5000 at
closeout pricing. $499 is a good price for a sampler that sounds
that good. The effects are good and it has 128 polyphony. I through
in an old hard drive, some cheap memory, and had a maxed out system
on the cheap.

That's an insane price. I almost bought one of those samplers awhile back
to replace my S3000XL at the time. Shame the Yamaha samplers had a few
issues and never really caught on. They are really nice samplers....

Thanks for the tip.
I've had a little time to 'think it over,' and I agree, your idea
on the VA is a good one. It would give me a simple FX processor,
vocoder, VA, and a well-endowed controller. I just wish the MicroQ
had a few more knobs. All those modulation routings...., don't want
a Q (too big).
Samplers - I'm looking hard right now for one, and a used
A4000/A5000 looks nice, but I may get a SU200 for now, since I've
still got a lot to learn on the XL-7, not to mention deciding on a
keyboard.

Re: [xl7] Re: MIDI keyboard controllers with the XL-7? and Hello!

If you're still learning the XL-7 and the keyboard, why not just wait to
buy a sampler for a bit? If you get it you know you're going to want to
use it, and that just makes one more thing to learn. I'm a firm believer
that you should have a pretty good grasp of a piece of gear before you
start adding to the collection. It definitely makes everything less
frustrating in the long run.

EMU 9063 Beat Garden 32MB Expansion ROM

2003-09-09 by Larry Stites

Newbie wants to know -

how to install the EMU 9063 Beat Garden 32MB Expansion ROM into the XL-7...
is this a simple process of opening the box and snapping in the chip? Do I
need any particular version of software to operate this upgrade? currently
running 1.3

Yep. It's simple. 8 screws and you're there. Read the FAQ for
details, or read the instructions that come with your ROM. And, no,
you won't need anything more than 1.3, but you should download 2.0
because (a) it's free, (b) it's got tons of new cool features (c) it's
more stable and (d) did I mention it's free?

I read some posts on the process of downloading and installing 2.0 - I kept
them for future reference which might be now. I could re - read and
following those directions unless you have all the details conveniently
available to send me now.

Where are you located?

There are 915 people on this list. Chances are, one of them is a a pc user in your town, who would be happy to update your OS for you.

bought it from Same Day Music @ $150 - have it installed in my XL-7 now and
it sounds really good... Didn't ask if they'd upgrade my OS for me but
instead - this Macintosh guy is going to use an IBM laptop in an attempt to
upgrade to 2.0 -

That is exactly how I did my last few OS updates. I used my laptop
from work and a USB one in one out MIDI interface.
