OS 1.18 Upload Problems with Macintosh

OS 1.18 Upload Problems with Macintosh

2001-12-18 by albert_thorn_audio

I've been trying to upload the "commandprep10.dli" file via
E-Loader for over 2-hours now without success. E-Loader
works *fantastic* for transfering patterns back and forth to the
Mac, but the OS just won't upload. I always get "MIDI Timeout
Error" on the XL7. Every time I attempt the upload, I get part of
the file transfered and then it just hangs. Sometimes I get 0
bytes transferred. I've been able to get a little over 70KB
transfered on my best attempt.

Can anybody share success stories, tips, or tricks for uploading
the new OS?

Here's my system:
       - Mac PowerBook G3/333
       - MidiMan MIDISport2x2 USB interface
       - XL7

I've tried swapping out MIDI cables, many reboots of XL7 & Mac,
increasing the Memory for E-Loader to 100MB (ridiculously high),
and holding my breath during uploads. No luck.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

- A.

Do you have both midi cables(in and out on xl7 to in and out on midi
interface) connected? Check your OMS setup. reset your Midi interface(pull
out the USB and power cable).
Hope this helps

Hmmm...

Since you are successfully uploading/downloading Sequences that would
indicate that your MIDI setup (OMS, cables etc) are correct.

Since you sometimes get 70K transferred, that also indicates the OS file
is good. (It would always fail immediately if the file was bad)

I have a MIDISport 2x2 and it has always worked fine for me. You should
make sure you are using the latest MIDISport drivers (check the MIDIMan
web site).

Do you have any other applications running while trying to do the
download? If so, try quitting all applications during the download
(Especially any other MIDI software, E-Mail programs or Web Browsers
that tend to do stuff iin the background). A fresh boot of the Mac might
help also.

What version of OS, and what version of Java are you using? (All of this
information will be shown in the Message Console).

What version of OS is currently in the XL-7? (shown when first powering
up the unit)

Have you ever succeeded in doing an OS Download before with this setup?

Albert,
I'm using the same computer with a USB MIDI interface. First off, make
sure your internet browser is not launched. Back ground tasks may cause
communication errors. If the download fails, re-boot your XL-7 (holding
enter, but you know that) and re select your MIDI device. Lastly, it
might be a good idea to turn your computer off, re-boot and do nothing
else before you launch E-Loader and download your OS. I have really good
success with E-loader and the few errors I get, the re-selecting of the
MIDI device does the trick . Make sure you have MIDI IN and OUT
connected correctly.

For All. Bottom line is, we want all of you to have the latest OS, we
put in on our web site as a convenience to you. If you are having
problems updating, please feel free to contact our service department
and will arrange for your OS to be updated the old fashion way (will
open her up and update her for you).

I love this group. This is the best-supported piece of gear I have
ever owned. Thanks everyone for all the feedback!

I tried resetting my MIDI interface several times- even unplugged it
and rebooted. Changed out MIDI cables with new ones. No luck. This
is so odd.

Nope; just E-Loader.

I've tried that many times.

Mac OS 9.0.4
MRJ version 2.2.4
Java Version 1.1.8
OMS 2.3.8
MIDISport2x2 Driver 1.0.0

> What version of OS is currently in the XL-7?

XL7 OS version 1.01

Nope. This is the first OS upgrade I have tried to do.

I wonder if I have the current Java version. Where can I check to
see if this needs to be upgraded?

I see that MIDIMAN has version 1.1.2 of the drivers for my
MIDISport. I'll update those tonight and see where it gets me.

MRJ 2.2.5 is available, but it isn't required. E-Loader has been tested all
the way back to MRJ 2.1 and no problems have been found. I am using 2.2.4 on
one machine and 2.2.5 on another and they both work fine.

I suspect that this will solve your problem. I think the 1.1.x drivers have
been available for nearly a year now. I believe the problems MIDIMan had
when they initially shipped 1.0 were all having to do with SysEx. E-Loader
relies heavily on being able to transfer lots and lots of validated SysEx
packets.

Let us know if updating to the newer MIDISport drivers did the trick or not.

Success!!!

Thanks Scott. I replaced the MIDIMAN drivers just now and
everything worked great on the first attempt. What a relief!

The new features in OS 1.18 are excellent. I'm going to be
putting the Event editor to good use in the next few days. I'm
really happy right now. Thanks again.
