It took 3 1/2 hours of trial and error to get the MP7 OS updated on an otherwise stable Win98 system. :( Java is an inherently unstable language that claims to be "portable" and fails miserably. <EZ-Loader EZ-Hang EZ-Crash rant deleted> Now that I've got the updated OS and pdf manual... How do you make a [complete] sysex backup/restore of the synth? (all multi setups, patterns, songs, etc) Jeff

I would like to try to separate out some facts from opinions here for the benefit of those who might be influenced by some of your comments. First off, I'm sorry if you had problems. I'm on this list to try and help if I can. In all fairness, MANY THOUSANDS of users have been able to install E-Loader in less than 10 minutes and have it work just fine for them. Proportionally it is only 'a very few of you' that are having troubles. I'm sorry if you were one of the few that had problems. If you would like to share with us what your exact problems were, and what you did to resolve them, it might help us all. Yes there are issues. I believe most of the known problems are discussed in the E-Loader Installation instructions, and others have been resolved to most people's satisfaction on this list. Over time we hope to eliminate the problems as best we can while we also continue to add new features. I hardly think that model is unique to a software application like E-Loader. The majority of problems we have seen have been on Win98/SE/ME. The original poster said that they were on Win 2000, so your experiences may not apply in their case. I've heard very few problem reports from W2K users, so I was very surprised when that post appeared. I still haven't heard back from that user what they found to be their problem. E-Loader is probably most stable on W2K because that is the primary Win OS that it was developed on. Of the problems reported with Java, the vast majority of them have shown to be only when running the Microsoft VM. Unfortunately, this is the default JVM installed on Windows machines, so users are most inclined to use that and then use their experiences with MS Java as their basis for judging all of Java. (That is essentially what the Sun lawyers have been arguing about for the past few years.) I highly recommend that users install the Sun VM and use it instead of the MS VM for best results with E-Loader on PCs. A compatible version comes on the CD that ships with all of our units. (If you are switching from MS to Sun you will need to un-install E-Loader and then re-install it after installing the new VM. This is because E-Loader remembers which VM it launched with the first time and will continue to launch with that VM thereafter.) Note also that there will be new features in the upcoming E-Loader 1.1 that will only be available to those running the Sun Java VM. This is because E-Loader will start using features only available in Java 2 systems (like Drag-and-Drop support), and the Microsoft VM is not Java 2 capable (and may never be if the lawyers have their way.) As far as I'm concerned, the problems with the Win* platform have very little to do with the fact that E-Loader is a Java application. The problems we have seen have mostly to do with the differences between the way Win95/98/SE/ME/2K/XP work. Those differences exist in the OSs themselves, and therefore would need to be resolved even if the application were written in C or any other language. And of course, let's not forget that there 'just might' be some bugs in the E-Loader code itself that can not be blamed on either the OS or the JVM one is using ;-) Scott
