Emu XL-7 & MP-7 User's Group

I guess I jumped the gun a bit because the P2K was my first E-MU 
purchase back in "99" and then I got a Launch Pad soon after as well 
as the Techno ROM by Rob Papen.  I then picked up the XL-1 in "00" so 
in a nutshell I guess I have a mini XL-7 and MP-7 since installing 
the Pure Phatt ROM in the XL-1 back in Feb.  I was impressed with the 
MP3's that I heard for the XL-7 and am eagerly awaiting the demo's 
for the MP-7.

It will be interesting to see these machines in action and I am 
looking forward to seeing and playing them.  Although my hardware 
sequencer is not as complex as the one on these machines, I think I 
will still be able to create with the setup that I have.  I did 
notice that with the inclusion of the sequencer, that some of the 
BEATs on the XL-1 and Mo'Phatt are now just kits.  Obviously since 
there is the pattern mode and sequencer, BEATs was not needed.  I 
hope that E-MU continues to support the other sites maybe with more 
downloads(presets:arps, new BEATs(Beatpusher, Artic Drift, In the Air 
to name a few).  So you see where I'm going with this.   

Being new to modules, I have really enjoyed E-MU's products and will 
continue to support them as much as I can.(On the list for Rob 
Papen's Beat Garden ROM but they will not take money until a # has 
been generated) Thank's Sean(you know why).

I hope this list is as good as the other 2 that I am members of.  I 
have rarely seen any bashing, just people trying to help each other 
out.  Let's continue that.

I sold my P2k shell, and kept the ROM, since I couldn't find a decent 
electric piano on the X-lead or the other ROM's I have.

I played it for about 20 minutes (felt a little guilty, since I 
already have one in the mail).

The grooves that comes with are >really< busy, and the ones I found 
were pretty much all straight 'trance/euro techno' styles. If this 
had been my first impression of the unit, I would have been seriously 
turned off :> But since I'm migrating from the p2k and used to have 
the xlead rom, I know what the sound engine and ROM is capable of, so 
I was stoked to hear so much going on at once, and hear the amount of 
flexibility and life could get from the track system.

The unit is moderately intuitive, despite the plethora of knobs and 
actions available at any one time. I'm sure that most actions will 
become unconcious quickly - the sign of a good ui. With the realtime 
controllers, you need to know which knobs do what to which sounds, or 
you won't get what you expect, just like the p2k/xl-1.

My biggest peeve, and it was either something to do with the way the 
unit was set up, or a >serious< bug - when switching between grooves, 
the unit LCD would flash and the beat would be lost momentarily - it 
was not seamless at all. The MP-7 sitting next to it didn't display 
this - it switched smoothly. If that shows up in the unit I get on 
monday, I'm going to be pretty concerned. However, I think this would 
be unlikely, since the unit is pretty much set up for seamless 
transitions - it waits till the end of the groove to switch over. 

It's going to take a lot of work to get the most out of this beast - 
since you can have an entire 64 midi channel groove on each of the 
sixteen tracks, it's really easy to get over-noisy, if you aren't 
100% sure what you are turning on at any one time. One thing I found 
myself wishing for was a latchable track system - where turning on 
one track turned off another. Emu?

dude the glitch you where talking about was there on the XL-7 when i 
got it home i just about had a stroke but there is a OS opgrade that 
fixes it completley so dont worry!

Please could you confirm the machines you are referring to in your comparisons - I see one is a command station, but the rest of your thread is a bit vague.
