Example: You're playing on channel 1 with the keypads. You like the
preset you have selected. You now decide that you want backing tracks.
You've created patterns in the past that didn't have any data on track
1. You can now select those patterns without fear of having it change
(or "whack") the preset you're currently playing.

The MC-505 (the only Roland groovebox I have experience with) leaves
track 1 blank for all of their factory patterns for exactly this
reason. It therefore does not save a preset change for track 1, just
like the XL-7. rEalm can probably chime in here and further detail the
differences bewteen the two units in this regard.

In any case, the way to save "templates" (which is basically what
you're trying to do) is to make sure there's an event on the track that
you want it to save data for. Quickest way to do this is to throw a
volume event at tick 0.

Hit stop twice to locate to 1.1.000. Go to step edit, and for each
track, wiggle a knob in volume mode. Save. Done.
