Well actually - when I first start the XL-7 and press the pads they all sound consistently as expected. It's when I get deeper into it and start experimenting (I couldn't tell you exactly what steps got me to intermittent sounding pads) that the 'problem' occurs. So I think it's a healthy XL-7 but to answer your question; I recently got it from Musician's Friend scratch and dent department - which makes me skeptical - but it shows not even a blemish and looks perfectly new with the plastic cover still on the liquid crystal display.
