Well you're not the only one. I very rarely leave a preset unedited on any piece. I think it is a combination of wanting something unique and looking to make something sound better. Presets often sound somewhat generic to me as if they are meant to be tweaked. "The really pro patches are hard to improve" It's not surprising that non synth players often do not share this view. For example quite a few guitarists I know would never think of editing a patch and are much more focused on the sound's melodic placement. It is similar IMHO to the way I view effects as part of the sound rather than a dressing a lot of times adding reverb to a snare will change the direction of an entire pattern for me. I remember an experiment me and friend had with his notron and the attack. Just by changing kits and leaving the pattern the same would change the style completely from rock to dub for example.
