It *is* from what I gather from reading the manual an intentional feature... says something like "at a pinch they can serve as extra line inputs" or something along those lines... You can make it a more sturdy solution by building a couple of leads with a mono jack at one end and a stereo jack at the other, and wire the tip from the mono jack to the ring from the stereo one. Or, tear an insert lead in half ;-) This way you can plug the jack in all the way rather than have it half hanging out.
