rEalm as far as general usage on the xl is there any reason to be in this 
menu?

Are there any general steps that one can take once in a while to make 
shure that everything is juzt alright ?

>>>Well, not wihout entering Diagnostic mode! :)  You can go in there and 
select the frist option (forgot the actaul name), which will test every 
aspect of the machine one by one.  Other than that, save often, and come 
up with a Preset/Pattern/Song naming convention that is meaningful to you. 
 Don't use cryptic names in otherwords. <<<
