Yes, you can do what you want.  Check the list archives, this was talked 
about quite extensively only a week or so ago.  I don't remember the 
specifics (I don't use this feature), or I'd save you the trouble.

I was told on this list that Multisetups are the way to go for 
someone that is not using the internal sequencer in an XL7. So, for 
all of my songs, I have setup a Multis that I call up before working 
on the song in Sonar. This works okay but now I want to use this 
peice of gear live and I cant for the life of me figure out how to 
send a patch change message and get a multi to load - i have this 
set for all the rest of my gear, its very simple - but there seems 
to be a trick with the multis... please help.
