Unfortunately, there's no way to set duration (or "gate") in grid edit
mode. There is in step edit (the gate parameter as a percentage of step
resolution). There are two new duration features, one in note/event
edit and one in duration scale/shift.

In note edit there's a duration field which you can edit. Note that you
could stay on the duration field and still scroll through events by
holding enter and turning the encoder dial.

Duration scaling/shifting works just like velocity scale/shift. Note
that you can assign a duration by setting scale to 0% and shift to the
value you want.

I wanted to put gate into grid edit, but there simply wasn't any room on
the screen! =)

There's always been two ways to change next pattern, one with the
7-segment LEDs and edit button in the middle and one with the 2x24 LCD
and home/enter button on the top.

The only thing that changed is the screen's UI to better show the
current and next pattern.

Exactly. This is basically for people who want to control external
gear. When a track is set to "external", information such as vol, pan,
preset, etc as set up on the main screen is not saved, allowing you to
set up your own info on tick 1.

Pretty much if you're not using external gear on a track, you'll
probably never need this feature, as the XL-7 saves whatever it needed
to for the internal synth automatically.
