This is pretty much the way I work too: BD's on channel 1 Snares on channel 2 HH's on channel 3 Alt snare on Channel 4 ETC... The reason I would like to be able to freely assign drum sounds to each key with in a Preset, would be so that I could compile all my favorite XL-7 snares in one Preset, same with BD's, etc. That way I can map those new Presets to the appropriate channels and save it as my default pattern. Just seems weird that the rhythm kits are limited to editing on 4 layers. Then again I'm used to working on Roland and Korg machines too... rEalm Using different MIDI channels for your kit will also give you independent control for each drum sound. Something I like to do is use one track for the full drum kit and then break out the individual parts into separate tracks. This gives me ultimate control, I can filter and tweak the whole beat if I like or, mute that track and select the individual tracks for independent control.
