I totally agree on the SP808, I finally got rid of mine simply because I allready had two other samplers and gigasampler. I do miss the effects like slicer, the eq cuts, phaser etc etc. If I weren't allready using all the other equipment I would have been pretty happy with just an XL7 and the SP808 (which can be upgraded to the sp808ex spec). The hardest part of using it though wasn't the four sample pad limitation, it was the fact that if the zip drive got too busy it wouldn't play back correctly (It streams everything directly off disk, nothing in memmory (!!!)) so I couldn't do a lot of the DNB tracks I needed to do. I wasn't trying to use it as a typical user was though I'm sure. Great piece of gear, manual is so so but once you wrap your head around the way the 808 is organized it's not so bad. I have an SP808ex, I like the red case :p. It is an excellent companion to the XX-7, I use my MP-7 to sequence the pads. You can't do drum programming on the SP808 due to the Zip drive being a little slow, but thats not really a big deal cause I use my computer to chop up any samples anyway, and essentially the EMU so excels at drum programming I only use the SP808 for more "organic" loops, grooves and phrases, while the EMU is for the drum solos and fills. Furthermore the SP808has a line in (and mic in) and a mini mixer, so the two can be used in combination without an external mixer which is great for a small livePA rig that does everything!! And also obviously you can send as much of the line in to the SP808 effects. Incidentally the new thing is to put a 750MB zip in the SP808 giving it 2.5hours sampling time. Im not saying it is a flawless device, roland sux serious ass in terms of support and manuals, but the SP808 forum is very helpful in learning. Essentially the SP808 is a mini recording studio with tracks, slicing/resampling, effects, and arranging functions. This is fairly different to the MPC series or the ES-1 which also are MIDI sequencing oriented. Because the XX-7 is such a MIDI beast, not to mention the wavetables are essentially professionally sampled drums anyway, this means that the Two units are PERFECT compliments to each other, where one excels, the other is no good. There is no funcionality overlap at all. I love them, they are so cute together. To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to: xl7-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com Your use of Yahoo!
