Re: [xl7] Re: SP303?

The only problem with having the SP303 in your set and wanting to sequence
with it, is that you'd really need to use the MP-7 to do the sequencing,
which may or may not be the most flexible, depending on your needs. If
you're always going to use the same sample with the same MP-7 pattern,
then it's not a big deal. But if you want to sample on the fly or change
up your samples depending on the crowd, then the Sp303 may not be the best
source since you'd have to have the sample triggering pre-programed into
the MP-7, including all the right PC commands.

Kind of a weird market, there's nothing out there that does every thing
I'd look for in a live sampler. The ES-1 has the easiest sampling and
sequencing features, and good effects, but it's limited (IMO) by low
memory, 33kHz sample rate, and you can't name your samples anything
useful, just numbers. The SP303 is similiar, but it doesn't have easy
sequecning at all and the effects are so so. My personal choice would be
the Roland sp808, which I used to own and love. Plenty of storage space,
KICK ASS effects (some of the best I've heard for dance music), nice pads
for triggering samples, and you can name your samples so they're easy to
find. Downside is that it's not something that would be super easy to
pogram sequences on live, at least from what I remember though it's been
awhile, and it's more expensive too.

I'm interested in sequencing with it foremost.
I'm trying to get my MP-7/live skills sharp enough to start
incorporating it into my DJ sets. I have a ways to go but in the
meantime I wanted 1.) The ability to sample 2.) I gotta have some
external efx and 3.) Price. Bang for your buck. The $300 price tag
looked good for getting a touch of sampling and efx. And I'm really
into efx, since all I do is techno/electro related.

At first I was just looking at a Kaoss pad, but I figured if that was
$300 too, why not go for the SP and get some sampling. Anyway, thanks
for the heads up on the ES-1. Most of the reviews I found on the SP
had the ES-1 right next to it. I'm gonna check it out.

shot sample, or used with sequencing on the XX-7? I'm getting pretty
close to getting a Korg ES-1 for the same thing, it's a bit more
flexible IMO. Not only can you trigger samples manually, it's very
easy to set up a sequence on the fly too. After owning my ER-1 for
years and loving it, I heartily recommend the Korg stuff, very solid
sound, and easy to use."
