Reek and Kris, you were right on.  I opened up the XL and there was a 
loose simm AND a loose connector.

It runs better now than it has for the entire month I've owned 
it :)   I guess it got jarred a bit in shipping.  I'll make sure and 
keep that in mind - it's a good tip.

And to think I had almost written off the XL as glitchy!
