I get the same thing, though I never noticed it being a knob issue, which
is definitely a possiblity. Occasionally (70% of the time) when I power
on the XL-7, the Preset on Channel 1A will show that it's dirtied. Makes
sense with what you say, since the Knobs default to Quick Edit mode on
that channel upon power up. No idea what's causing it, but I don't think
it has anything to do with his issue (I could be wrong though).
Are you sure it's your Pattern getting dirtied, and not the Preset?

Sometimes (especially when I first power up the XL-7), one of the 16
knobs will suddenly send
its current value, essentially "dirtying" the pattern. I can see this by
the knob LED that lights
up. Sometimes just changing to another pattern and back is how I fix
this. Other times, I just
switch from "Quick Edit" to "Volume" via the upper left hand button. This
is a hardware bug it
seems to me and may just be affecting my machine. Perhaps this is what's
happening to your
machine too?
