I think you're confusing the XL-7 with an "auto-accompaniment" unit. 
It is a sequencer into which you can record your own tracks into.  It's
not really designed to create backing tracks on its own like a
"Casio-style" keyboard.  It does have an arpeggiator, but I'm sure
that's not anywhere near what you're expecting.
