I would recommend Windows XP from "ShouldaboughtaPC".  :)

Seriously, I'm not into the whole mac thing as I use a PC, so my opinion 
is only based on what I've read.  I know Digital Performer 4 just came 
out, and a lot of people like that.  Alternately you could look into one 
of the cut down versions of Pro Tools, or Emagic's Logic as well.

Maybe drK will pipe in on this one.  He's a part-time Mac head.
