Re: ORCHESTRAL ROMS

2003-03-24 by lionelcassin

I recently compared the Siedlaczek and the Orchestral Vol 1.

1. Both of them sound great. There was no obvious deficiency in
either.

2. The Orchestral Vol 1 is solely strings, whereas the Siedlaczek is
all sections of the orchestra. Also important to note is that many
of the *presets* that come with Orch Vol 1 ROM rely on sounds from
the Vol 2 ROM, so if you purchase Vol 1 by itself, a lot of the
presets will sound odd or not sound at all.

3. As one would expect, OrchVol1 gives a lot more detail. If you
want 4 contrabasses doing tremolo, or 5 violas spiccato, this ROM
has it. The sounds are excellent, but you're getting a lot of
granularity, which can make your head spin.

4. In contrast, the Siedlaczek does not separate out violins,
violas, celli, etc. Nor does it separate out the winds or the brass
into separate instrument groups. Not enough room on a single ROM. So
you'll get "Super Winds" or "Sustained Winds Oct FF". So, if your
composition requires a solo instrument, or a solo instrument group
(e.g., clarinets only), the Siedlaczek chip is not going to help.
The obvious exception is the percussion section, which sounds
fabulous on the Siedlazcek.

5. Therefore, if you are doing really detailed classical
compositions (e.g., trying to recreate the sound of the string
quartet or wind band), or you need solo instruments, then you'll
probably have to get both the Orch chips. If you're looking for more
general pads and large instrument groupings, the go with the
Siedlaczek. I chose the Siedlaczek because I don't think in terms
of "hey, this part could really use 16 violins con sordino with
clarinets and oboes".
