Well for a 20 year old synth we should be grateful it speaks MIDI at all
(this being the 20th anniversary of MIDI) :-)

All kidding aside, the DX-7 is a SYSEX monster but it also has a wonderful
performance-oriented control system that you can tap into. Its been a
*long* time since I plumbed its depths but I recall that it has ModWheel
(CC01), BreathControl (CC02), FootControl (CC04) and volume (CC07) and
aftertouch. These can be configured within each patch to control important
facets of the sound, which (with some knowledge of FM programming) give you
a similar result to filter cutoff or envelop amount. So the prospects are
not as wide open as say a typical new synth but there are some good things
you can do.

One obscure note, one of the controllers the DX responds to is CC06, data
entry slider. if you select a parameter in the DX(TX) and then send this
message from say the XX-7 you can control a single parameter of your choice
in real-time. This can be used as a work-around in some instances.
