Emu XL-7 & MP-7 User's Group

In song step-record mode: 
I can't delete a step, making the subsequent steps "shift" to the space
occupied by the deleted step. 

The best I can do is _erase_ a step and it will show --NONE--
as the current pattern, but it can only be at least a length of 1
so there's a blank space of at least 1 measure.

Is that how it's supposed to work, or should I be doing something
else?
