If you are not going to be changing patterns within the song. You could stay in pattern mode and set the Knobs to volume control, or just mute the tracks via the track buttons. Which could get confusing if you get distracted. I like the volume knobs for the simple live thing. But if I am playing guitar. I don't have a lot of free time or hands to be tweaking and pushing.
