Re: [xl7] Using the XL-7 with Protools (or any DAW)

2002-12-28 by iproduce@bellsouth.net

gongvibe,
That was totally it. Thanks a million. It threw me off because it said "0=midiclk" and there is no zero! I rolled it over to "ext" and it locked up perfectly, song position pointer worked great..everything.

So I had to make basically 16 sync'ed up passes thru Protools HD. I have to say the timing seems perfect or close enough...I can't notice any drift whatsoever now. But it was a pain to do and took almost 3 hours for a 4 minute song! It was so cumbersome and timeconsuming I'm wondering if I ever want to go thru that process again--seems it would be much easier to just trigger the XL from a computer sequencer cuz then you can easily mute tracks on the computer...but then you loose that quick-spontaneous asset of composing on the XL, which I like. I'd love anyone elses feedback using a similar XL / Daw and how you do it.

Anyway, here's what I had to do:

1. Turn off all other midi channels except the one you want to record (as described by drk, thanks!)
2. Change the outputs in global for that channel for EACH PATTERN to the outputs you want (i.e. thru the main L/R for effects etc). This was a time consuming part since the song had around 25-30 different patterns.
3. Save the pattern

What ended up happening is I somehow erased or changed the preset settings for each pattern so when the song played back, the presets on each track (that had a patch change mid-song) didn't change on any of the patterns that had sound changes!! Accept patch change was on...so don't know what I did.

Any suggestions for not duplicating what I did in the paragraph above, and for use in concert with a DAW would be further appreciated.

Thanks

jho

Make sure the the TEMPO page in the MIDI menu is set to "ext"

sync'd up well to PT. I like your idea of turning off the midi channels, so I
was going to make 16 passes. By the fourth or fifth pass, tho, there was a
noticible drift happening despite my attempts to make sure everything was set
to start properly. Any other suggestions? Is anyone having similar midi sync
/ timing issues? I love the box but can't use it if it won't sync to Protools.
My MPC2000XL has always synced right up no problem.

E-loader and then load them into PT (thinking I'd replay the box from pt as a
midi device). I couldn't get E-loader to see my XL7...I have a mac Ti
powerbook running OS9, with a MOTU fastlane. Everything seems to be connected
properly...is there any trick or secret? Anyone know when USB direct connect
to the box will be supported on the Mac?
