It's all about everyone wanting the rights to it, no one is willing to let 
another manufacturer design the "next new thing" without having a say in 
it.  I was hoping the yamaha's mLan would change all of this when I first 
read about it a couple of years ago, though it doesn't seem to be going 
that way sadly.

I started thinking about these things today.  My question is this:  Midi 
is
a slow interface.  Why are we still using it?  Why doesn't someone come 
out
with MIDI 2?
