You press the REC button twice. In this mode, the 16 track mute buttons
correspond to a 1/16th note grid. So each mute button is a 1/16th note
within a measure. Then you want to press the keypads until you hear a
sound you like, typically this mode is used for drum sounds, but you don't
have to use it for just that. Once you find a sound you like, then any
grid button that is activated (lit) will play a note at that location as
below. It's best to not think of it as two rows, but one long row that
equals a measure.
