At this stage I am unconvinced that the XL/MP is tight, so what I
really want to do is quantify things (especially since E-mu are still
working on software releases; if there are timing issues it would be
wonderful to get them addressed).

This is an important answer. The XL/MP is a sophisticated synthesiser
rather than a simple analogue-modelled beat box, and well worth
experimenting with. The programming interface isn't perfect, but it's
pretty good compared to some of the boxes out there.
