Velocity shows up in the patch cord source list as four different options:
    VEL+    the amount of the velocity of the note played which acts on the
destination in a positive, additive manner.  So, for example, setting this
to Filter Cutoff would cause the cutoff frequency to rise for any velocity
above zero, the amount depending of course upon what scaling factor you used
for this cord.
    VEL+-   which is also the amount of the note velocity but interpreted so
that values above 64 add to the modulation destination, the value of 64 does
nothing to the destination, and values below 64 subtract from the
destination according to the formula value = played value - 64.

    VEL <   This is likely the most useful for normal velocity effects
because it takes the destination and applies the velocity modulation so that
a maximum velocity always produces the same result as if you did not
modulate at all.  In other words velocity less than the maximum will reduce
the destination parameter by a mount determined by how much under the
maximum it is and how you scale.  This is very useful for AMP as well as
filter cutoff.

and not to be forgotten...
    RLSVEL  which is like VEL+ except it uses the release velocity of the
note.  Some keyboards even output this :-)
