Use the link-preset features as you have mentioned as well as the four layers in each preset. Up to 12 separate drum or percussive sounds can be assembled this way, including each having its own range of the keyboard to respond as appropriate (including pitch shifting) and things like separate filtering, tuning, effecting... To make this work though using the included kit instrument files is probably not the easiest way. Emu has generously included additional instrument files in the PRC category which are individual samples of each instrument. So, for example, there are quite a few kick and snare instruments to choose from. Poke around in those and see if they do what you are looking for. Also, with this type of approach to drum kit programming remember that *any* instrument file along with suitable synth programming is fair game for making a "drum" sound.
