Re: Contest!

2002-10-25 by nifflas

I have quite a lot experience of hosting music competitions. I've
hosted my "Nifflas 30 sec competition" at www.nifflas.com and is
about to host "Spectrum Music Competition 2003"... I'm also a host
for one hour music competitions on IRC (Each artist gets the sample
pack and should submit a complete song within an hour, based on the
sample pack samples). Here's some advice I can give to you that will
make it more simple to host a competition.

* A homepage is really important. At least a competition URL with
information about the compo itself, how to submit the song. A compo
(aka. competition) can not only be held at a "message board" like
this, it will be too hard looking up the information you need. And
how to tell a friend? Can't give him a whole bunch of rules. Better
to give him an URL.

* There's no need to hurry. If you want to get like 20-30 entries,
there has to be a quite long time to the deadline, after the official
compo start. I started N3C in January, and set the deadline to March.
Many people had time to find and read about the compo, and I got lots
of nice entries.

* Maillist. Everyone who submits a song could automaticly become a
member of a maillist, where you get information (not often at all)
about what's happening to the competition (when the competition is
over, the maillist should of course not exist anymore). If you decide
to do it - keep in mind that you should not send a single mail to
multiple e-mail adresses at the same time. Privacy is important to
avoid chain letters and ads. Keep each persons e-mail adress secret
to the other people.

I would join such a compo. Count me in. I might already have a song
ready which is completley made with the XL-7, but this is if you
allow multiple roms.
