Command Station Roms (Was Re: [xl7] Re: Poll results for xl7)

2002-10-16 by Neila Eliphas Spare

I for one think the ability to burn roms within the XL7 itself would be a great feature, HOWEVER, I really don't understand how this could be pulled off through a mere OS change. This idea, though great, really seems to me that it would deal not nearly as much with an OS change as it would with a necessary change and/or addition to the hardware itself. Where I'm coming from on this is reall more of a programmer point of view. I'm thinking O.K., I develop X program, that does function(s) X. For the sake of argument, lets assume here (which would most likely be the case in reality in regards to myself) I developed this program for ones personal computer (most likely Windows platform). Anyhow, my friend John would like to grab hold of program "X", which I developed. Now John lacks a CD, CDR, CDRW, DVD, 3.5" disc drive, 5" floppy drive, etc. Fortunately he does have a way to connect to the net, so I tranfer the program to him in this manner. Now once he receives the program, he finds that he wishes he could save some of it's results to a disc (be it CD, or whatever). I go ahead and create an update to the program to enable it to do this, but a new problem quickly arises that quickly brings all my work to a halt. The problem is that John lacks the hardware on his computer to enable him to save the results from my program on any kind of disc. The result is that he ends up having to purchase a CDR, 3.5" drive, or something of the like.

I think one can already see the analogy being made here. We have a Command Station(s), which are much like John's computer in the formentioned example. Much the same way that I was able to transport my program to John via the net, EMU is able to transfer a certain amount of things through the USB and able to transfer samples to us via ROM chips. Now though, we reach a point, where we begin wanting to begin saving results to ROMs within the Command Station itself, this is pretty much the same as when John wanted to begin saving results from my program to disc. Well, like John's computer which lacked the proper hardware to enable him to save the results to disc, so does the Command Station lack the proper hardware to conduct such action. So now EMU could go the route as I did with John, and create updated software that supports such functionality, HOWEVER, without the proper hardware to back up and carry out the newly implemented functionality you're going to meet a dead end. Like John, you end up in a case where additional hardware is needed in order to carry this out. Hmmmm, O.K., cool, so EMU just needs to toss a hardware addition out way then right? Well, yeah, that would be right, BUT, the thing is that they already have, and that hardware being the EMU "whatever" sampler(s) that are capable of going ahead and burning the ROMS for us.

Anyhow, I very well may be wrong in my thinking here, and perhaps there is a way to include the ability to burn ROMS within the Command Station itself. HOWEVER, if in deed there is a way to go about doing this, I can't say I understand how it can be done. If anyone knows of a way to go about doing this, please voice it.......otherwise, I think we should really think about such a notion, as it's making a request of EMU that they really have no way of even carrying out.

Respects,

         Aaron Nesby

I think that the good folks at e-mu can see the value in all
suggestions regardless of whether or not people vote. There are no
doubt many more people who just read this NG than actually post.

and here is to increased functionality for those Play Pads,
