Unless I'm just missing something really obvious? Perceived wisdom (i.e. the way that most other instruments do it) is to treat controller data as performance input rather than programming instructions. Certainly you don't want to save volume or mod-wheel (or pitchbend, although that's not strictly a controller) with the patch. SysEx is almost always considered programming input; RPN's and NRPN's are a bit iffy, since so few devices implement them that there's no real precedent. The XL-7 (in fact, most of the Proteus line) have this notion of an initial controller amount, which *is* part of the patch, so the issue is confused by the various ways that this can be changed (as an edit, rather than a performance or control gesture). As I recall the Audity, Proteus, XL-7 et. al.'s front knobs change this (and hence edit the patch); I would hope that external CC input would not do either. Just to add to the confusion, volume and pan are control inputs from the point of view of the patch, but could be considered program data from the point of view of a sequence or pattern... -- nick rothwell -- composition, systems, performance -- http://www.cassiel.com
