What makes a sequencer with a graphic interface better (in some
objective sense) than, say, a sequencer integrated into a sound
generator with a lot of dedicated physical knobs and buttons?

The XL-7 sequencer beats the pants off Digital Performer for knocking
up and working with patterns, grooves and ideas really quickly, and
besides, not being a computer, it's not as distracting to the creative
process. Digital Performer is clearly superior for the real "heavy
lifting" of sequence recording and mixdown.
