EUREKA! (since we are dreaming anyway):
 
How about a choice in software that changed the ON/OFF button into an 
on/off button for the light only!! :) Better yet (I know you will love 
this rEalm), a 3 level light on/off button: first press on low, second 
press on medium, third press on full, 4th press off, and around and 
around, like some lamps I have seen.
 
Then at most, when you hit the button you would just flash your lights! 
Calamity!

All they need to do, if they can't require a hard hold countdown, is to 
make the countdown abort upon any incoming data, whether midi data from an 
external source or data cause by pressing buttons or turning knobs on the 
box itself. Such would be almost foolproof.  The BEST solution is to allow one to choose to disable the function of the 
button completely in software. One can always use the back switch, or in a 
rack situation, one can disable it in critical situations.
