This is well accomplished by song mode. If you go into pattern mode while playing a song, it grooves on whatever pattern was currently playing indefinitely. Then, if you go back to song mode without stopping, it will pick your song back up at the beginning of the pattern during which you left. This way, you can be cruising along through your song, decide that your audience is really digging that breakbeat in the middle, switch to pattern mode and improvise over it, then when they finally get ready for the rest of the song, you can pop right back in...
