OT: Cubase SX Impressions

2002-06-12 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

IMO, the new SX rocks. Much, much improved over VST5, a lot more
streamlined and intuitive. For me it came at a perfect time, I was just
considering upgrading to Nuendo to take advantage of the better audio
processing features, but SX pretty much IS Nuendo, with better MIDI
support. Being able to do everything right in the Project window is
great, and the new Mixer is sweet too (though a tad large in extended view
for my tastes). Over all it seems much more stable too, although that
could be XP as well.

The new audio processing is nice in that the timestretching and
pitchshifting can be set to use Prosoniq's MPEX (TimeFactory) algorithms,
which saves me the hassle of having to launch a seperate program just to
stretch things. Also, the new tools (parabola, sine, triangle, etc) open
tons of possibilities up, especially with the vastly improved automation.
Being able to apply effects to just clips (and fade them in/out) is sweet,
as is unlimited undo. As you can tell, I'm blown away by it so far.

Downsides? Well these are my own personal opinions, they may not be big
deals to others:
- The grid currently doesn't snap to quantize values in the project window
like it's supposed to. Critical when you're doing drum parts at 1/96th
resolutions. (to be fixed)
- I think the mixer window is too big, you can't see it extended without
the Transport and CPU meters overlapping it (no matter where they are),
which means lots of window shuffling during a mix IMO. (to be fixed)
- Currently, the system resolution is fixed at 480ppqn, which might cause
some problems when transferring MIDI files to the XL-7. (to be fixed soon
too)
- Umm, that's it for me!

I didn't have a lot of time working on it YET.
Initial reaction was buy it cus until now that is the major update to
the software this is not exactly update but reengineering of that
product to comply with Win2K and XP.
The use in the software became much more easier to use (user friendly)
Hopefully it will not require tons of new updates like the old Cubase
VST 32 (every week there was new update new fix new beta actually it
drove me nuts. it showed me a company that will get hurt from the
user point, why should I buy a software that will crash, will not
work properly or any thing else and every week or so update it, I am
sure Steinberg don't want to drive their customers away.
Actually I will recommend them to release demo version.
Soon I will dig into the software more and more the weekend will be
great time, I just installed it two days ago, it is still early to
come up with good review.
