use an insert cable and only have it connected to the ‘Return’?

Having trouble getting the sub outs to work as line inputs. I know I must be missing something really obvious.� I have a synth im trying to run in. Do I just need a normal instrument cable or do I need to use a trs? Is there a setting in the menu I have to turn on? The manual doesn't seem very clear on this. Thanks
