I have both an ES-1 and the SP-303 (plus the SP-505.) Here are my opinions. The ES-1 is better at programming/playing patterns where the individual samples are one-shot single percussion instruments (like a drum machine.) The fixed sampling rate is 32kHz which may make a difference to your application. You can't save/load individual samples to the smart media card; you have deal with the entire machine contents at a time. This also implies that a higher-capacity smart media card does not extend the maximum sampling time. The effects enable some fairly warped resampling that can be cool. The SP-303 is better at playing sample loops where the beat pattern/sounds is fully contained in the sample. The 303 is also far superior for use in live 'DJ' style sampling. Max sample rate is 44.1kHz and WAVE files can be imported through the smart media card (first you have to copy them onto it from a computer interface.) Maximum sampling time is increased with a higher-capacity smart media card. The effects are also very good, I think, for the intended purpose of mangling for resampling. The SP-505 adds more extensive pattern and song programming capability, many more banks in which to store samples, a good mix of functionality between the two machines (SP-303 and ES-1.) However, because of the menu structure access to functions, the 505 is less "immediate" in live usage than the 303. If you want to sample your own one-shots and build step sequences, then the ES-1 (or SP-505) is great. If you want to deal with sample loops, the SP-303 (or 505) is better.
