Re: [xl7] Best - most interesting ROMs

2014-07-16 by Scott E. Whitehead

Has anyone ever tried to build sounds synth-style from standard wave forms?  I keep looking at it as a possibility but then get sidetracked, mostly though option paralysis and interface fatigue.  Now that I've got the editor working reliably, I'm ready to give it another try.

I'm perpetually befuddled by the organization of the Beat ROM.  There are so many great sounding percs (mostly, some tones too) stored away with each sound set.  I suppose the idea was to have a single kit for a whole track but it's like they're squandered in there.  Also, many of the presets look like they're in there as part of a larger kit even though there doesn't seem to be any pattern to how they're stored.  Did anyone ever make complete sense of how it's layed out?  Can you explain it to me so I can be more efficient?

My standard routine with the MP7 ROM sound set is to find something that's close and drop the vocals (usually) out and add release.  That gets me a long way back to just a good sample.  Then squish the heck out of it with cutoff and I'm close to where I want to be.

Protean Drums, All the drums you'll ever need, plus a bunch more!

Mo'Phatt is not the best, but it can be useful, especially if you edit your own sounds. It does have some crappy preset's though.

i tend to agree with bruno here. the m/phatt rom is pretty useless. although it does have some decent drums if that is what you are looking for.

as far as the TSCY and Beat Garden they are really only useful for drum sounds. their 'synth' samples are pretty limited and not very useful. the HALO/ZR76 rom is alright.. but it also has a bunch of useless general midi soundsets that you will never use. the "perfect" piano was ok for its time.. it was cool 15 years ago but here are a ton of far better sampled pianos that you can get for Kontakt etc. now
if you don't have the composer i would get that as it is a great all around rom.

ive owned almost all of the roms (except for the orchestral ones) and i can say that I probably have used the composer most of all over the years.

for me, the rom i use the most is the composer. the rom i use the least is the halo (and mp/phatt)
