RE: [xl7] Emu music challenge?

2013-05-13 by Andrew Mansfield

Unfortunately, all my gear is still in boxes from having moved in January... but I'll finally have some time to get it all set back up for some much needed electro-therapy here in the next couple of weeks... and I'm stoked!  My usual workflow is an E-mu x-board 49 Midi Controller that feeds into a laptop running Sonar Producer, where I have more softsynths/softsamplers/misc toys than I even remember installing.  I use that as my master clock/DAW, and send a full 16 channel MIDI bank to the B side of the XL-7 which also has the Mo Phatt Rom.  The B side handles most of the leads and melodic stuff.  The A side I sequence with the onboard sequencers and do most of the beats, arps, and rhythmic stuff.  I usually use the sub-outs as stereo pairs... occasionally I'll try something with mono-ing them out, and I've never tried using them with an insert jack.  Also from the A side, I use it to control CC automation for 2 external effects processors and a Roland SP-808, which is currently out of commission due to a dead Zip Drive... I've been following the 808 list and have seen where some people were able to modify theirs to take other storage devices, but I kind of want to keep mine original.  I rarely use the onboard effects on the XL-7... I love the way it interfaces with the modulation matrix, but I don't like being so limited with how they can be applied... plus I do notice some lagging when I'm pushing a lot of MIDI through... so I find it's usually best to do most of my effects processing with the outboard gear and sample that as necessary.  For effects, I use a Lexicon MX300 and a Line6 PODPro... the POD is one of the first run models and the guy I bought it off of threw away the users manual (F*ing guitarists!)... I thought I'd be able to figure it out or at least find the manual that went with that particular model online, but so far no luck... so I pretty much only use it to get a particular sound and then sample it, because I know I'll probably not be able to ever get it back... and good luck automating it without the users manual!  I also run a DBX 166XL compressor and an Aphex Aural Exciter for dynamic control and color, neither of which are MIDI devices.  Everything goes to the patch bay, and that all goes to a Mackie 1402VLZ.  I'm real big into programming and automation, and then setting up the RTCs on the X-Board and XL-7 for tweaking different parameters... I love my XL-7, it's the greatest piece I've ever had the joy of working with... I've never once run into a situation where I wished I could do something it wasn't capable of, it's always been a matter of figuring out how to make it do what I want... overall, this is probably the most well thought out electronic music device ever built!  Over the summer, if anybody is looking to collaborate and just have some fun let me know... I'm itching to make some noise!

I enjoyed the music, too.

I haven't made music in several months, but this thread is inspiring me to want to carve out some time in a couple of months to do some all E-Mu music. I tend to mix my E-Mu with other gear, but it might be a fun challenge to just use E-Mus. (Since my main E-Mu is the P2500, I'd probably have to rely on a non-E-Mu keyboard as a controller.)

Anyone else up for taking an All E-Mu Challenge?

Steve
