Apart from the issues, is the sound quality from SPDIF really worth it?
I have two command stations connected to my MOTU 828, one comes thru SPDIF, one thru the line input. I've *got a feeling* that one coming thru line input has better dynamics. But since both CSes share one ROM, I can record some patterns from both and see (hear).
As I said, it's about having a feeling, so please don't shout, though any clarifications would be welcome.

I've experienced something similar. I've had a p2k for 10 years and for the first 5 I was never able to get even a signal out of SPDIF. One day it finally started working but locking is hit and miss. Sometimes there are no problems (running an RME HDSP AIO to sync to the p2k spdif out) but other times the clock is unstable and i get a bunch of clicking sounds... on the plus side you can get p2k modules for about $100 these days so it's not a bad idea to have a spare lying around for parts. I'll probably have to do the same as I want to keep my p2k going for years to come!
