Unfortunately, I don't think you can do what you want. As you know its there for recording, but not playback. Other ways to start the clock/sequencer include foot pedal and midi start byte (which you don't want). If its really important to your performance style, you could build a small microprocessor thing that sends the start clock/sequencer byte when a note event is received.
