Ok I'm kind of mobile right now so ill explain quick and if u got problems lmk.
Basically first u need to understand the concept that channels and tracks are different and that channels can be routed to tracks in the pattern edit menu.
Once you realize that then you need to go in the global menu under outputs ( I believe) and edit the channel (not track!) u are sending to from your track. You need to route the channel u want to go to external effects to go to sub out 1 (which will be unavailable as a choice unless u have something plugged in). Alternatively you could set it to preset and edit the outputs in the preset itself.
Since sub out 1 and 2 are inserts you can use insert cable to send and receive external effects which are then mixed back in to the main signal but since they are analog signals and there is no A to D on the command stations you will be unable to route externally effected signals to the internal effects engine (in any way, ever. )
Additionally if you route via preset you can use the knobs as effects sends if you route your cords appropriately
Hope this helps. I'm on my cell so I don't have a manual or a CS in front of me.

Hey, Matt ...

No teasing allowed! So how about helping the poor guy out with routing out the effects?

The difference between you and me is that you already know how to do it and I'd have to dig out the manual, digest it and try to distill to simple instructions ... and then probably get it wrong.

Yes but you can use the insert jacks to do what he's talking about?

You cannot put external audio through the synth engine or FX chips. There are a lot of us folks who wish you could. Sorry.

If you can find an E-Mu Ultra sampler with the RFX-32 option, you could do it. An E5000 Ultra with the RFX-32 went for $400 (US) a week or two ago. They are rare, but they do pop up.
