Very true! It is the hardware and the OS that determine whether or not you can use MidiM, MidiN, MidiO, MidiP. If the factory presets on a specific ROM are designed for a 12-controller box, you can redefine anything in the preset and store the tweaked preset in User slots--including making use of MidiM --> MidiP. I think you explained it well--just edit patchcords to make use of the additional controller options.
